The objective is to clarify whether Darren Beattie has commitments in the country after former president Jair Bolsonaro asked to reschedule his visit to Papudinha
O minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes requested this Wednesday (11), that the Itamaraty send information about the agenda of Darren Beattie in Brazil. The objective is to clarify if the advisor the Donald Trump has commitments in the country and asked to visit former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in Papudinha, in Brasília.
Next Wednesday (18). Bolsonaro’s lawyers, however, filed a request to reschedule the visit for Monday (16) or Tuesday (17)stating that the advisor already has agendas in Brazil that cannot be rescheduled, which would make the meeting on that date unfeasible.
For Bolsonaro’s lawyers, the date chosen by the minister “ends up making the actual carrying out of the authorized visit materially unfeasible”. As he is a “high-ranking US State Department” official, there is no concrete possibility of extending Beattie’s agenda.
Moraes asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for “information about the existence of the diplomatic agenda of Darren Beattie, current Senior Advisor for Brazil Policy at the State Department of the United States of America, and a possible request for a visit to Jair Messias Bolsonaro”.
Moraes had determined that the meeting would take place on Wednesday because it is the specific day for visits to the 19th Military Police Battalion of the Federal District, Papudinha, where the former president is serving a sentence of 27 years and three months in prison for an attempted coup d’état.
“There is no legal or exceptional provision for making a specific change in the day of visitation,” said Moraes in the decision, remembering that the Visitors must comply with the prison regime and not the other way around, in order to preserve the administrative organization and security of the site.
Beattie comes to the country with the aim of understanding how the Brazilian electoral process works. According to lawyers, the visit of the advisor “has clear institutional interest”.
Appointed to the position last month, . Beattie is critical of the Lula government and minister Alexandre de Moraes, for the coup plot process.
