Bolsonaro, admitted to the ICU for bronchopneumonia

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro is in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Brasilia due to bacterial bronchopneumonia after suffering high fever, sweating and chills during Thursday night.

“Imaging tests and laboratory analyzes were performed that confirmed bilateral bacterial bronchopneumonia of probable origin due to aspiration. He is currently hospitalized in the intensive care unit, where he receives intravenous antibiotic treatment and non-invasive clinical support,” the doctors indicated in a statement reported by Brazilian media.

The former president – who is serving a 27-year prison sentence for his participation in the coup attempt at the end of 2022 – had been transferred this Friday to the DF Star Hospital, in Brasilia, when feeling unwell due to vomiting and chillsas reported by his son Flávio through social networks.

A recent report prepared by the Brazilian Federal Police concluded that Bolsonaro needs continuous medical monitoring due to his delicate state of health, although it was found that he could remain in the Papuda prison complex where he is serving his sentence for the coup.

This evaluation was ordered by Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes in the midst of his defense’s attempts to have the former president serve his sentence in house arrest for humanitarian reasons. Bolsonaro has undergone numerous surgeries for various abdominal problems, hernias and intestinal obstructions, resulting from the stabbing he suffered in 2018 when he was a presidential candidate.
