United States President Donald Trump said the country could escort vessels through the Strait of Hormuz if necessary and promised to intensify attacks against Iran “very strongly next week.” The statement was given in an interview with Fox News aired this Friday (13).
The war involving the United States, Israel and Iran entered its 14th day with mutual attacks against strategic points and infrastructure. According to Trump, Washington is prepared to guarantee the safety of navigation in the region, one of the main global oil transport routes.
Tehran largely maintains a blockade of the strait for ships, a position that was reinforced by new supreme leader Mojtaba Khalamei in a speech read on state TV on Thursday.
In the interview with Fox Newsthe president also assessed that a popular uprising in Iran will “probably” occur, although “perhaps not immediately”. According to him, the Iranian government’s repression makes popular mobilization difficult.
“When they go around with machine guns, shooting at people and saying, ‘all of you who are protesting, we’re going to get you in the streets,’ I think that’s a big obstacle for people who don’t have guns,” he said.
