The hospitalization of the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) diagnosed with bacterial bronchopneumonia raises concerns about a possible “potentially deadly risk”, according to the medical team. Experts point out that there is a real possibility of the situation worsening, especially considering the age of the former president.
According to the Policy Analyst at CNN, Caio Junqueirahis current condition is unprecedented since he was arrested. “Bronchopneumonia is the first time since he was arrested that this scenario has happened, this health condition that is serious,” explained Junqueira.
The analyst highlighted that when a person of Bolsonaro’s age contracts one like this, there is a “real possibility that the condition will evolve negatively, get worse and he will die.”
Bolsonaro’s defense should take advantage of the new diagnosis to reinforce requests that had already been made previously.
Junqueira recalled that in Papuda, where Bolsonaro is detained, there is a button that activates SAMU and medical care is available, but argues that the issue goes further: “There is mainly a psychological issue, which also ends up, according to doctors, impacting his physical health.”
Political impact of the case
A possible worsening could have significant political repercussions. “Bolsonaro’s very serious situation also tends to have an impact, in some way, even on politics. If he dies, if something happens along those lines, a very big debate will arise, more than it already is, about the Federal Supreme Court”, analyzed Junqueira.
In previous requests for house arrest, Bolsonaro’s defense usually cites the precedent of the former president’s case, who was imprisoned for around a week. However, the analyst makes a point of highlighting that they are different cases: “The case is a conviction for corruption, that of Collor. And the case of Jair Bolsonaro for an attempted coup d’état.”
Another factor that weighs in the analysis is Bolsonaro’s age, who is over 70 years old, in addition to his health situation, which is now worsening with the diagnosis of bacterial bronchopneumonia. Junqueira also recalled that the repeated requests denied by the courts end up having a political component, since “Fernando Collor did not have the clashes that Jair Bolsonaro had with the (Supreme Federal Court)”.
