Rock guitarist Phil Campbell has died peacefully at the age of 64, his family has announced. IThe information was released by Campbell, a native of Pontypridd, who was the band’s guitarist Motörhead from 1984 until 2015, when the heavy metal formation broke up after the death of frontman Lemmy Kilmister.
In a statement on Facebook, the family said he died after “a long and courageous battle in intensive care following a difficult operation”. He was described as “a devoted husband, a wonderful father and a proud, loving grandfather who was affectionately nicknamed Bampi by his grandchildren”. “He was deeply loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. His legacy, his music and the memories he created with so many people will live on forever.” added the nearest.
Mick “Wurzel” Burston, Lemmy Kilmister, Phil Campbell and Pete Gill formed Motörhead in 1984, a line-up behind heavy metal anthems including the legendary Ace of Spades. Campbell later pursued a career with his own band, playing alongside his three sons. He just recently played a sold-out gig at the Muni Arts Center in his home town of Pontypridd.
“All of us at the Y Muni Center are saddened by the news of Phil Campbell’s passing,” the art center said. German heavy metal singer Doro Pesch she said she was “at a loss for words” and added that she was honored to call Campbell her friend.
