About half an hour from the border with Portugal, a small Spanish town is trying to reverse the loss of population with an unusual proposal: very cheap houses, job opportunities and municipal incentives for those who want to change their lives.
According to the website specialized in economics and finance, , the initiative takes place in Aroche, a municipality integrated in the Holapueblo project. The program is promoted by Redeia, Alma Natura and IKEA, with the aim of revitalizing rural areas affected by depopulation, encouraging job creation and attracting new residents.
Housing at very low prices
One of the main attractions is the local real estate market. According to the same source, it is possible to find a two-story house, measuring around 60 square meters, located on Calle Torres, for around 11 thousand euros.
Another available option is an independent house measuring 34 square meters, located on Rua Cuesta, advertised for approximately 14 thousand euros.
Despite requiring some restoration work, these properties represent an unusual opportunity to live in a historic village at much lower prices than those charged in large cities.
Economy linked to local products
Aroche’s economy is mainly based on local production. One of the most emblematic products is Arochena sausage, a traditional specialty produced only in this territory.
This regional product plays an important role in the area’s economic activity, supporting restaurants, bars and tourist accommodation that welcome visitors interested in the gastronomy and landscapes of the mountains.
Lack of professionals in various sectors
In addition to new inhabitants, the municipality is looking for professionals for several areas where there is a shortage of labor.
Among the most necessary professions are bricklayers, electricians and plumbers, essential for the rehabilitation and maintenance of houses. In the social sector, there is also demand for support services for the elderly population and for initiatives aimed at children and young people.
In agriculture and livestock, there are still opportunities linked to the production of meat, cheese and honey, activities that maintain a significant weight in the local economy.
Available services and local incentives
Despite its small size, the village has essential services, including internet connection, transport, medical assistance, schools and cultural and sporting activities.
The city hall also promotes measures to attract new residents, such as a housing census that facilitates access to available homes, the transfer of agricultural land and the provision of commercial spaces. There are also incentives aimed at family and community projects.
With affordable housing, job opportunities and a strong local identity, Aroche is trying to counter the trend of depopulation in the Spanish countryside. For those looking for an alternative close to Portugal, the location appears as an increasingly considered option.
