Macron calls on Iran’s president to cease attacks in the region and release the Strait of Hormuz

The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, spoke this Sunday, 15th, by telephone with his counterpart from Iran, Massoud Pezeshkian, who asked for an immediate end to Iranian attacks on countries in the Middle East and also the unblocking of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

“The unbridled escalation we are witnessing is plunging the entire region into chaos, with serious consequences today and in the coming years. The people of Iran, as well as those across the region, are paying the price”, criticized Macron in a post on X.

According to the French president, he “urged” the Iranian leader to “immediately put an end to the unacceptable attacks that Iran is carrying out against countries in the region, whether directly or through proxies, including in Lebanon and Iraq.”

For Macron, only a new political and security structure will guarantee peace for everyone. “Such a framework must ensure that Iran never acquires nuclear weapons, while also addressing the threats posed by its ballistic missile program and its destabilizing activities regionally and internationally,” he urged.

The French leader also called on Pezeshkian to allow Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris to return to France safely “as soon as possible.” Kohler and Paris were released by the Iranian regime in November 2025, after being arrested three years ago during a tourist trip on espionage charges.
