Two strong earthquakes, of magnitude 7.1 and 7.5, shook Venezuela on Wednesday night, causing the collapse of buildings in the capital, Caracas, and forcing thousands of people to abandon their homes and workplaces. The tremors, recorded just one minute apart, are among the most intense to hit the country in more than a century.

Authorities warned of the risk of aftershocks and mobilized emergency teams to the most affected areas. Earthquakes were felt in several Venezuelan states, while tsunami warnings were issued for some areas of the Caribbean.
