Ukrainian president Volodymyr On Wednesday, during a visit to Spain, Zelenskyy called on the European Union to overcome Hungary’s veto regarding the promised loan for his country in the amount of 90 billion euros. Ukraine relies on the EU finding a solution, because there is no alternative to this loan, he said. TASR informs about it according to the reports of the AFP and Reuters agencies.
Hungary is blocking the already agreed loan for the years 2026 to 2027, as well as the adoption of the 20th package of anti-Russian sanctions, in part because of the stoppage of Russian oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline. Zelenskyi considers the issue of the loan to be the main topic of the upcoming summit of EU leaders, which will take place on Thursday and Friday in Brussels. He stated that it is unfair that its provision to Ukraine is being delayed, which he says most European countries are aware of.. The Ukrainian president has previously described Hungary’s position as blackmail.
The EU loan for Ukraine is supposed to consist of military aid, for which Brussels proposes to allocate 60 billion euros. The second part is general support for the functioning of the Ukrainian state and basic public services, for which the remaining 30 billion euros should go.
“We really count on countries and the EU to find a way to solve this problem,” he said during a visit to Madrid, where he held talks with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Later on Wednesday, he is also scheduled to meet with King Filip VI.
On Wednesday, Sánchez declared that the war in the Middle East will in no way affect Spain’s stance on supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia. The Spanish Prime Minister announced the plan at the same time bilateral support for Ukraine in the amount of one billion euros for 2026. Madrid and Kyiv also concluded agreements in the field of joint production of military equipment, including drones, missiles and radars.
