ArcelorMittal Brasil inaugurated today (18) a new iron ore processing plant at the Serra Azul Unit, in Itatiaiuçu (MG), an investment of R$2.5 billion. This expansion is part of an investment cycle of R$25 billion and increases the mine’s production from 1.5 million to 4.5 million tons per year.
Acquired in 2008 by ArcelorMittal, the expansion of the Serra Azul Mine began in 2022 and is nearing completion. The new structure extends the useful life of the mine until 2056. In addition to the modernization of industrial units, the project includes expanding the portfolio of products and services, acquisitions and investments in renewable energy.

“The objective of expanding Serra Azul is to increase production, extend its useful life and enable it to operate with less carbon emissions, a global commitment from the company”, states Sérgio Botelho, executive director of the Mine.
Production will be destined for the Group’s plant in Mexico. THE pellet feed is an ore with a high iron content (around 67%) and low levels of impurities. It will be sent to the railway terminal, where it will be loaded onto train sets and transported approximately 500 km to Porto Sudeste. From there, the product will be shipped and shipped to the North American country.
