The president (PT) made official the departure of (PT) from the position of Minister of Finance and appointed him in his place. The decree was published in the edition of DOU (Official Gazette of the Union) this Friday (20th March 2026). Here is it (PDF – 371 kB).
Durigan has served as the Executive Secretariat of Finance since June 2023. On that occasion, he replaced Gabriel Galípolo –currently president of the Ministry of Finance –, who left the position to become director of Monetary Policy at the authority. At times, Durigan held interim command of the ministry.
The fact that Durigan is a trusted name for Haddad and that he has become closer to the head of the Executive in recent months has weighed on the leadership of the ministry.
On Thursday night (19 March), the president of the PT, Edinho Silva, announced Haddad as the pre-candidate of the Workers’ Party for the government of São Paulo in the 2026 elections. The official announcement was made at the Metalworkers’ Union, in São Bernardo do Campo (SP), Lula’s political birthplace.
At the event, Haddad declared that he will not be a “sacrifice” contest the election. According to the now former minister, the choice took into account the chances of victory and the possibility of promoting changes in state management.
Haddad took charge of the economy at the beginning of Lula’s 3rd term, in 2023. He was previously Minister of Education (2005-2012) and mayor of the city of São Paulo from 2013 to 2016.
Haddad’s pre-candidacy is seen by allies as the 1st step in organizing the presidential dispute against the senator (PL-RJ). Lula will seek his 4th term.
