Alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) defended Brazil’s pioneering role in biofuel and emphasized that the country cannot turn into a “kind of Saudi Arabia for biofuel”. “Our ethanol, from sugar cane, produces more energy per planted hectare, has one of the smallest carbon footprints in the world and reduces emissions by up to 90% compared to gasoline,” he said.

The president also highlighted that he will not throw away the energy transition opportunities that are available to the world. “Whoever wants to produce with cheaper energy and truly clean energy, look for Brazil, as we have space and opportunity for those who want to invest in the future”, concluded Lula, who also criticized barriers imposed by the European Union for the use of the resource.

The EU intends to reclassify biodiesel made from soy, which could lose its status as a renewable resource in the EU from 2030 onwards, a measure that would directly impact Brazil and Energy.

Lula also highlighted that the EU’s plans to reach 50% renewables in its matrix by 2050 is already a reality in Brazil, which met this target in 2025. “Our fuel already emits less. So, we just need to exchange this experience so that you can understand that, when Brazil says that it will be a global power in the energy transition and that it will be a global power in offering renewable fuel to the world, we are not saying little”, said Lula.
