It applies in the eastern part of the High Tatras on Saturday at an altitude above 2000 meters there is a slight avalanche danger corresponding to the second degree of the five-part international scale. The Avalanche Prevention Center of the Mountain Rescue Service (HZS) in Liptovský Hrádek informed about it.
“Due to the influence of snow and wind, especially on the leeward slopes of the northeast and northwest orientation, snow slabs and pillows of different thickness and hardness have formed, which lie on the layer of hail from the last light snowfall. Together they will form a critical dangerous layer. It will be possible to release the avalanche with a large additional load.” informs the center.
In most of the mountainous area of Slovakia, there is a low avalanche danger on Saturday (first degree). Old firm snow is hard in the morning, softens during the day on southern, sunlit orientations. In the northern sector, it moves into softer layers.
In the last period, up to five centimeters of snow fell. Locally, snow slabs and pillows have formed on the hard surface, which are not sufficiently connected to the surface. The release of a small avalanche is particularly dangerous on steep slopes, mainly with a large additional load.
