Robert Mueller, former FBI director who, as special prosecutor, led an explosive election investigation against Donald Trump, died this Saturday (21) at the age of 81. American media reported that Mueller died on Friday night (20), citing a statement from the family, without specifying the cause or location.
On his Truth Social network, Trump reacted: “Robert Mueller just died. Well, I’m glad he’s dead. You can no longer hurt innocent people!” Mueller was head of the FBI for 12 years. He was then appointed special prosecutor by the Department of Justice to conduct the investigation, between 2017 and 2019, that was supposed to determine whether Trump’s presidential campaign conspired with Russia to guarantee his election.
In 2019, after two years, Mueller testified before Congress about the investigation, which Trump called on several occasions a “witch hunt”. The investigation began after Trump fired then-FBI Director James Comey.
The former federal police chief said his report did not exonerate Trumpbut largely avoided answering questions from lawmakers, both Democrats and Republicans, repeatedly referring only to the results of the investigation. His career as a public servant spanned four decades, during which he worked for both Democratic and Republican presidents.
Mueller, a combat-wounded Vietnam veteran and graduate of Princeton University, served as a prosecutor in San Francisco and Boston. He handled cases ranging from homicides and organized crime to bank fraud and terrorist attacks. Two of his most notorious cases featured New York mafioso John Gotti and General Manuel Noriega, from Panama.
After retiring in 2013, he worked in a private office in Washington.
