China promises to open economy and reinforce support for foreign companies

The Chinese Prime Minister, Li Qiangpromised this Sunday (22) open further the economy and fully implement national treatment for foreign companiesas the country seeks to reassure the world amid rising global trade tensions.

China will focus on promoting high-quality development and continue to create a favorable business environment so that enterprises entering the country can develop with trust e achieve great successLi said during the China Development Forum in Beijing, according to state media.

The annual two-day forum – which ends on Monday (23) – serves as a platform for Beijing to promote its economic trajectory and investment opportunities to foreign business leaders, Chinese officials, economists and academics.

This year’s meeting comes as the world’s second-largest economy faces growing tensions with major trading partners over last year’s record $1.2 trillion trade surplus.

It also precedes an expected visit from the US president, Donald Trumpwho postponed a trip originally planned for the end of March due to the war between the US and Israel against Iran.

Among the executives present are representatives of Apple, Samsung Electronics, Volkswagenchip maker Broadcom Inc.two industrial conglomerate Siemensfrom the chemical producer BASF and pharmaceutical Novartis.

No executives from Japanese companies appeared on the guest list on the forum website.

Li said China will import more high-quality products and work with trading partners to promote balanced development of trade and expand global trade volume, describing the country as committed to being a “pillar of certainty” and a “port of stability” for the world economy.

He said openness and technological progress are necessary to create new markets.
