Police arrest suspects of attacking capybara in RJ

RJ Civil Police arrest six men and arrest two teenagers for beating a capybara

The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro arrested six men red-handed e seized two teenagers by beat a capybara in the north of the capital. The case happened at 1:19 am on Saturday morning (21), on the edge of Quebra Coco beach, on Ilha do Governador.

The attack was recorded by security cameras. The recordings show the group attacking repeatedly the animal with pieces of wood. The capybara falls and rolls on the ground, but the attacks persist.

The Civil Police defined the episode as a “barbaric attack” com “brutal attacks”. The case was registered as ill-treatment, criminal association e corruption of minors.

According to the corporation, the images were “fundamental” in identifying those involved.

Capybara is in rehabilitation clinic

Agents from the City Hall Environmental Patrol rescued the capybara. The animal received first aid at the scene. Soon after, he was sent to the Wild Animal Rehabilitation Clinic for specialized care.

The Municipal Environment Secretariat stated that the “capybara was brutally assaulted“.

Capybaras are present in several urban areas of Brazil, which increases exposure to risky situations and mistreatment.
