The State also saw a 5.6% reduction in claims involving victims in the same period; there are drops in all modes
The registered a 10.4% drop in the number of traffic deaths in the first two months of 2026, according to data from Infosiga, a statistics platform managed by Detran-SP (São Paulo State Traffic Department).
There were 817 deaths, compared to 912 in 2025. In addition to the drop in fatal incidents, there was a reduction in claims involving non-fatal victims, 5.6% in the same comparison (14,532 records, compared to 15,390 in 2025).
The biggest reduction occurred among cyclists: 32 deaths compared to 60 in 2025, a reduction of 46.7%. Among car occupants, there was a reduction of 10.6%: 160, compared to 179 in the same period in 2025.
Pedestrian deaths also fell in the last two months, when 206 incidents were recorded, compared to 213 in the same period last year (a drop of 3.3%).
Even in relation to motorcyclists, there was a drop in total: there were 364 in the first two months, compared to 384 in the same period of the previous year (5.2% less).
Fall also in the capital
In the capital of São Paulo, traffic deaths fell 4.4% in the first two months of this year (129 compared to 135 in the same period in 2025).
Deaths among motorcycle occupants in the city fell 4.8% in total (from 63 to 60 occurrences). Among pedestrians, the drop was 5.3% (54 versus 57).
Educational Actions and Respect for Life Program
Detran-SP carried out almost 500 educational actions in the first two months of 2026, compared to 197 in the same period of 2025, that is, a growth of more than 150%.
The messages raise awareness of the democratic sharing of the “traffic” environment, with a priority focus on the most vulnerable audiences, such as motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians.
It also strengthens road safety, through integrated speed management, inspection and promotion of safer roads.
These initiatives are enhanced by the new version of the Respect for Life Program (PRaVida), which now operates based on evidence, technical criteria, ongoing training and a focus on results.
With investments and technical support, the program works in partnership with municipalities to qualify actions and make traffic safer.
