On Saturday, the Caribbean island of Cuba experienced a large-scale power outage across the entire territory of the country with approximately 11 million inhabitants, the country’s Ministry of Energy announced. It is the second nationwide blackout in less than a week and the country’s fourth in the past four months as Cuba grapples with a US oil embargo. Cuba’s Ministry of Energy said on Grid X that there had been a “complete disconnection of the country’s electrical system” and that work had already begun to restore electricity supplies throughout the country.
The Caribbean island has been struggling with a serious energy crisis for a long time. The state of the outdated power grid has deteriorated significantly in recent years, leading to frequent blackouts and repeated large-scale blackouts.
The country is facing tension
The Cuban government also attributes some of the problems to sanctions by the United States. US President Donald Trump’s administration warned in January that it would impose tariffs on countries that supply oil to Cuba. At the same time, Washington demands the release of political prisoners and political and economic reforms in exchange for easing sanctions.
The stoppage of key oil supplies from Venezuela is also deepening the energy crisis. Experts warn that without significant investment in infrastructure and new energy sources, the island could face further economic decline, social tension and possibly mass migration.
