Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Fernández de Cossío says that the country is preparing for a possible US attack, but considers it an unlikely scenario
Cuba is preparing for the possibility of a military attack from the United States, although it considers the scenario unlikely. The statement was made by the deputy minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Fernández de Cossío, in light of the increased pressure from the North American president (Republican Party) on the island.
In an interview shown on Sunday (22 March 2026) on the program, Cossío stated that the Cuban Armed Forces maintain readiness in the international scenario. “And, in fact, they are preparing these days for the possibility of military aggression. We would be naive if, considering what is happening in the world, we didn’t do that. But we sincerely hope that that doesn’t happen,” said Cossio.
According to him, Cuba hopes that a conflict does not happen, but did not detail what measures are being adopted. “Our armed forces are always prepared”, he stated.
The speech was made in a scenario of increasing pressure between the 2 countries. The sanctions imposed by the US have been expanded and include a de facto blockade of fuel supplies, worsening the energy and economic crisis on the island, with successive blackouts in recent weeks.
Despite opening recent negotiations with Washington, the Cuban government claims that it is not discussing changes to the political regime. “The nature, structure and members of the Cuban government are not part of the negotiation”declared Fernández de Cossío.
The vice minister also said that Cuba is “open for business”, but rejected US-imposed conditions related to internal political changes or the release of prisoners.
Trump has intensified his rhetoric against the Cuban government and even stated that he would have the “honor” to take control of the country. The statements increased diplomatic tensions at a time when the energy crisis on the island is worsening.
