Noelia Castilloua young woman of 25 years, must resort to euthanasia this week, after a process that lasted more than a year and a half and involved legal disputes with his own family.
Resident in a care unit in Sant Pere de Ribesin the region of Barcelonathe young woman saw her right to a medication-assisted deathin accordance with Spanish legislation.
The process, however, suffered significant delays due to father’s oppositionwho appealed to the courts with the support from Christian Lawyersan ultraconservative organization.
“You never call me, you never send me messages. Why do you want me alive? To keep me in the hospital?”he asks.
After exhausting legal resources, Noelia’s decision will be able to come true.
“I don’t feel like doing anything”
Noelia stayed paraplegic in 2022, following a suicide attemptmotivated by a journey marked by family problems, mental health and an alleged episode of sexual violence.
Since then, he reports living with persistent pain e severe limitations which profoundly affected the quality of life.
“Even before asking for euthanasia, I saw my world as very dark […]. I don’t feel like doing anything, not going out, not eating, not doing anything, and sleeping is very difficult for me, in addition to having pain in my back and legs”, reports Noelia.
“I want to go in peace”
In recent statements to the programyes Antenna 3the young woman stated that she wanted put an end to suffering.
“QI’m sure go in peace and stop suffering”, he said, highlighting that the decision is personal e no aims to serve as example to third parties.
A family this divided regarding the decision. While the mother expressed difficulty in accept your daughter’s choiceo pai actively opposed to the process, contributing to its prolongation.
“Nobody in my family is in favor of euthanasia. Obviously, because I’m another pillar of the family. I’m leaving, but they stay here with all the pain. But I think: what about me, with all the pain I’ve suffered all these years? I want to leave now in peace and stop suffering, period”he explains.
In Spain, the euthanasia is a legal practice since 2021, but it continues to generate ethical, medical and legal controversy, especially in situations of family conflict.
