March 25, 2026 was declared “Greek Independence Day: National Day of Celebration of the Hellenic and American Republic” by the president of the USA, with a presidential proclamation issued on March 24, inviting citizens to commemorate the anniversary with appropriate events.
In the declaration, the American president connects the Greek Revolution of 1821 with the principles of American democracy and emphasizes that the two countries share common values, such as freedom, self-determination and democratic governance, giving particular importance to the historical role of Greece as the cradle of Western civilization.
As he states, “on Greek Independence Day, we honor the wisdom and determination of the Greek people, who shook off the shackles of despotism.” At the same time, he notes that the Greeks “renewed the promise of freedom that was born for the first time in their ancient land” and “reaffirmed their position as the cradle of Western civilization”.
Continuing, he points out that “the miracle of self-government emerged for the first time in Greece, where citizens gained a direct voice in the fate of their country”, adding that this spirit sustained the Greek people “through centuries of foreign occupation and hardship”.
Referring to the Revolution of 1821, Donald Trump noted that the Greeks launched “a noble struggle that broke the shackles of autocratic power,” commenting that for nearly a decade “their freedom was forged in the flames of conflict and sacrifice.” He also underlined that this effort was based on the belief “that every nation has the right to self-determination”.
The American president connected the Greek experience with the American one, stating that “the United States was born in the tradition of democratic self-government” and that its citizens believe that “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are a sacred right that they have from their birth.” In this light, he notes that “an oppressed people will endure any trial” to establish just government and ensure freedom.
Special mention is made of the Greek-American community, which, according to President Trump, “enriches the history of our Nation with its entrepreneurship, its faith in God and its unceasing passion.” As he points out, these principles have defined the American way of life since 1776.
At the same time, the American president states that “Greece stands by the side of the United States” through its adherence to common values, commitment to the defense of Western ideals and the promotion of international peace.
Referring to the completion of 250 years since American independence, he points out that the USA draws inspiration from the example of the Greeks “who refused to give up their sovereignty and kept the flame of self-government”, adding that “our two nations are allies in freedom, united by history, tested through struggles and of course for the promise of a bright future”.
In closing, he underlines that this spirit “was born in Athens and inspired the fathers (of American democracy) in Philadelphia”, whose dedication “to the cause of human freedom will never cease to inspire people on both sides of the Atlantic”.
As noted, the proclamation was issued under the authority granted to the president by the Constitution and laws of the United States, with Mr. Trump officially declaring March 25, 2026 as Greek Independence Day and calling on citizens to commemorate it with appropriate ceremonies and activities. The proclamation is dated March 24, 2026, the 250th anniversary of US independence.
