When he first announced negotiations with Iran, US President Donald Trump did not name the alleged contact person in Tehran, but praised him as the right man. He was quickly identified as Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf. The 64-year-old is a veteran of the Islamic Republic’s bureaucracy, speaker of parliament since 2020, former mayor of Tehran, populist and considered corrupt. And like everyone who now plays a role in Iran, Ghalibaf comes from the Revolutionary Guard.
