Invasion of Iranian islands gains momentum, with the possibility of military escalation becoming increasingly real
The Pentagon is preparing different military intervention options to execute a “final blow” in the war against Iran which, in addition to an intense bombing campaign, will include the participation of ground forces, the website reported this Thursday.
According to the North American digital newspaper, which cites statements from four official sources, the United States Department of Defense (Pentagon) is considering four distinct military operations from which North American President Donald Trump may choose.
The options include invading or blockading the island of Kharg, Iran’s main oil export center, invading Larak, an island that helps Iran control the Strait of Hormuz, and taking the island of Abu Musa and two smaller islands, also strategic due to their location near the western entrance to the strait.
Finally, there is the possibility of directly blocking or seizing ships exporting Iranian oil on the eastern side of Hormuz, according to sources cited by Axios.
Military operations are being prepared just hours before the end of the five-day deadline that Donald Trump imposed for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
At the time of the announcement, last Monday, Trump stated that Washington would suspend attacks on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure during those five days.
Before that, the US President had threatened to destroy these facilities if Iran did not completely reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The possibility of a military escalation arises in parallel with talks seeking to end the war.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, confirmed today that Islamabad acts as the official channel for indirect talks between the United States and Iran and that Washington has put on the table a 15-point proposal – as The New York Times had advanced – to put an end to the conflict, a proposal that “is being analyzed” by Tehran.
According to Ishaq Dar, messages between the two powers are being transmitted through Pakistani diplomacy and “brotherly” countries, such as Turkey and Egypt, among others, which are also supporting the initiative, according to a message published on his account on the social network X.
Trump today issued a new ultimatum to Iran to come to the negotiating table “before it is too late”, threatening that, otherwise, “there will be no turning back”.
“They better get serious quickly, before it’s too late, because when they do there will be no turning back and it won’t be pleasant,” Trump wrote on his social media site, Truth Social, referring to the negotiators, without giving details.
For its part, Tehran assured on Wednesday that it considers the 15-point peace proposal presented by Trump to be “excessive” and presented its own plan, which includes conditions such as the recognition of its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump has not yet made a decision on whether to intensify military operations, but, according to US media, he does not exclude this possibility if negotiations do not progress.
The United States and Israel have been carrying out a large-scale military offensive against Iran since February 28.
Iran responded to the offensive with attacks against countries in the region and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a fundamental maritime route for transporting oil and natural gas produced in the region.
