Donald Trump has decided to give more room to diplomatic channels in the midst of escalation in the Middle East. The president of the United States announced this Thursday that he is extending the suspension of attacks against Iran’s energy plants for another 10 days, postponing any action until April 6.
“At the request of the Iranian Government, I hereby declare that I will postpone the deadline for the destruction of energy plants by ten days”he noted on social networks, setting the new deadline for the early morning of April 6 in Spain.
A turn after days of maximum tension
The decision comes after Washington had already postponed the attacks for five days and issued an ultimatum of 48 hours to Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key point for the global oil trade.
Now, Trump insists that the talks “are still ongoing” and that “they are progressing very well”, distancing themselves from information that points to a blockage in the negotiations.
The president also assured that Iran has allowed ten American oil tankers to pass through the strait as part of a “gift” to the United States, a gesture he interprets as a sign of openness.
Indirect negotiations and mutual distrust
Despite Washington’s optimism, Tehran maintains a much more cautious discourse. Iran has denied on several occasions the existence of direct negotiations with the Trump Administration, although it has acknowledged indirect contacts.
In this context, Pakistan plays a key role as an intermediary. His Foreign Minister, Ishaq Darhas confirmed that there are “indirect talks” and that the United States has conveyed to Iran a 15-point proposal that is currently being analyzed.
Iran’s conditions
Iran has already responded formally to that plan, making its demands clear. Among them, it asks for guarantees of “non-repetition” and that any agreement include the end of the conflict on all open fronts in the region, which would affect also to scenarios such as Lebanon and Iraq.
The differences remain important, which maintains uncertainty about the outcome of these negotiations.
A conflict with high human cost
All this occurs while the war continues to leave a devastating balance. Iranian authorities raise more than 1,500 were killed by the US and Israeli offensive, including key figures in the country’s political and military apparatus.
The extension announced by Trump It does not mean the end of the threat, but it does open a temporary window to attempt a negotiated solution. A pause in the middle of an escalation that, for now, remains without a clear solution.
