PSD appeals to the STF to ask for direct elections for Rio’s government

The PSD state directory in Rio de Janeiro and federal deputy Pedro Paulo (PSD-RJ) asked this Friday (27) to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) that the election for the buffer mandate of governor and lieutenant governor of the state is carried out directlywith the popular vote at the polls.

The party intends reverse decision of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) that determined the holding of indirect elections in condemning the . The indirect election is carried out through the votes of state deputies of the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj).

According to the party’s lawyers, the STF’s jurisprudence determines that direct elections be held in cases of double vacancy in the positions of governor and vice-president by decision from the Electoral Court.

“The imperative, although not only legal, but democratic and institutional, represents the desires of civil society and an imperative to rescue institutional normality in the state of Rio de Janeiro”, defended the party.

Minister Cristiano Zanin was chosen to report the request for direct election. Earlier, Zanin expressed his support for determining a popular election.

The vote was given in the trial in which the virtual plenary of the Supreme Court confirmed that the elections will be indirect.

In addition to Zanin, ministers Alexandre de Moraes, Gilmar Mendes and Flávio Dino also voted in the same direction, but were defeated.

Currently, the president of the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro, Ricardo Couto de Castro, temporarily holds the position of governor of the state.
