War in the Middle East: What are the chances of the US and Iran reaching an agreement?

The war in the Middle East is facing a week of great instability, marked mainly by fluctuations in statements by United States President Donald Trump.

At the beginning of the week, Trump signaled the possibility of ending the conflict quickly, which generated positive reactions in financial markets that were looking for some definition of the horizon for the end of the war.

However, in a later official statement, broadcast on all American television channels, Trump drastically changed his position.

During the speech, surrounded by US flags and presidential symbols, he stated that he would “completely destroy Iran” and “take it back to the Stone Age”, an expression he has used on other occasions.

The American president also declared that he would continue bombing the country, indicating the prospect of a prolonged war.

Crisis with NATO and criticism of European allies

In the same statements, Trump (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). In an interview with Reuters, he even said that he was “disgusted” by the Western military alliance.

He told the British newspaper the Daily Telegraph that he would formally withdraw the United States from the organization.

The statements caused great concern in Europe, where countries are trying to organize themselves to guarantee their own security, as they currently depend heavily on the Americans.

Trump also mentioned that NATO should defend itself and that the United States would not help its European allies when they needed it, justifying that they did not support him on the Iran issue.

These statements represent a break with the fundamental principle of the alliance, based on mutual trust and a commitment to collective defense.

Chinese proposal and prospects for ending the conflict

Amid escalating tensions, China began to get involved in the conflict, presenting a proposal that, on paper, appears simple: a ceasefire combined with the liberation of the Strait of Hormuz.

Under the Chinese proposal, Israel and the United States would stop attacking Iran, and in return, Iran would release maritime traffic in the Strait.

The blockage of the Strait of Hormuz has caused serious economic impacts, including in the United States, where the price of gasoline reached a record, reaching 4 dollars per gallon (approximately 4 liters), a value that has not been recorded since 2022.

This situation has generated pressure on Trump, including from his most loyal supporters of the MAGA movement, who are already beginning to criticize the war in the Middle East and its economic effects.

Trump’s official statement, which initially could have been an attempt to calm the American population, ended up having the opposite effect.

The comments to his statements, especially when he distanced himself from any responsibility for and did not present a clear timeline for the end of the war, mentioning only a generic deadline of “two to three weeks”.
