Minister of the Federal Supreme Court André Mendonça received this Monday (6) the Necklace of Honor of Merit, the highest honor of the São Paulo Legislature.
The event, proposed by state deputy Oseias de Madureira (PL), was attended by governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) and mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), among other authorities. The former Minister of General Counsel of the Union and nominee for the Supreme Court, Jorge Messias, was also at the event. Messiah sat at the main table of the meeting.
— And talking about tributes, it’s interesting because on our part of gratitude comes the moment when we, to some extent, think that we don’t deserve all of this. But you gift us with all of this. And in front of this ceremony in which I must be grateful, at the same time I feel the responsibility to commit myself to such a generous speech towards me. The least I can do is, to some extent, take responsibility for this generosity. Make, despite my limits and my imperfections, some public commitments so that, in fact, I live up to these honors — said Mendonça.
At another point in the speech, the judge said that he seeks impartiality in trials, despite his evangelical alignment.
— I see the press saying, ‘ah, because there’s a religious proximity there, because there’s a historical proximity, because there didn’t act correctly with him at a certain moment, he’s going to benefit A and it’s going to harm his’. I don’t have that right. The mission entrusted to me does not give me this right. Be it the public mission, be it my faith. In fact, I was taught to pray for those who understand me. To bless even them. So, it’s a commitment I make, even though it’s imperfect. I will try to be impartial — said Mendonça.
Mendonça was selected, around two months ago, as the new rapporteur of the Master case at the court after Dias Toffoli decided to leave his post. Less than a month later, he ordered the preventive arrest of banker Daniel Vorcado, from Banco Master. His role not only in the Banco Master case, but also in INSS fraud, increased his role in the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

“He does not” for Messiah
One of those present at Alesp, the former general lawyer of the Union Jorge Messias, who was nominated by President Lula for the position of minister of the Supreme Court – the vacancy has not yet been approved by the Senate -, has had an electoral campaign in Mendonça for the post.
One day after being nominated for the STF, Messias was received by Mendonça at the National Convention of the Assemblies of God Ministry of Madureira (Conamad), in São Paulo. Messias was hugged by Mendonça as soon as he took the stage.
This Monday, on at least two occasions, when Messiah’s name was mentioned on the microphone, a small group of people who were in the House’s gallery shouted “not him”. Messiah did not speak and also did not speak to the press.
