The meaning of suffrage
Tamás Sulyok was elected to the position of President on February 26, 2024 in a secret vote of the Hungarian Parliament. His election was supported by the deputies of the ruling Fidesz-KDNP bloc, and he received 134 votes. Most of the opposition MPs did not participate in the vote. Sulyok replaced Katalin Nováková in the position, who resigned after the controversy related to the granting of amnesty in the case of a pedophile affair.
Before his election, Sulyok served as the president of the Constitutional Court, from which position he resigned after assuming the presidency. His call to participate in the elections comes at a time when Hungary is facing several political and social challenges, and the elections can fundamentally affect the further development of the country.
