Almost 45 years later, it’s hard to believe it. When the artist Margot Pilz created a sandy beach near the pond directly in front of Vienna’s Karlskirche in 1982 and placed palm trees, deck chairs and parasols on it, city beaches were still unknown. It was an absolute novelty! The project was created as part of the Vienna Festival Weeks Kaorle at Karlsplatz Back then, as a social place of longing, it invited people to linger. According to Pilz, it was a sign of freedom. The campaign was remembered by many in the city.
