The of withdrew a public civil action against the digital influencer Bruno Monteiro Aiub, better known as , who had been accused of anti-Semitism for defending the existence of a Nazi party in Brazil recognized by law.
The speech took place four years ago, during one of the episodes of the Flow podcast, created and presented at the time by Igor Coelho. “The radical left has much more space than the radical right, in my opinion. I think the Nazi had to have the Nazi party recognized by law. If the guy wants to be an anti-Jew, I think he had the right to be,” said Monark.
The Human Rights Prosecutor’s Office requested compensation of R$4 million for collective moral damages. The controversy resulted in Monark’s departure from the club and even sparked a police investigation.
At the end of March, prosecutor Marcelo Otavio Camargo Ramos spoke out, defending the dismissal of the action. The prosecutor began the piece by highlighting the importance of combating anti-Semitism, citing the context of the war between Israel and other countries in the Middle East.
He concluded, however, that Monark did not commit a crime and stated that his speech fell within the limits of freedom of expression.
“Conversely, defending the freedom of conviction and expression of individuals who adhere to such an ideology does not imply adherence, endorsement or relativization of its content, limiting itself to the abstract statement that, in a democratic regime, the State should not repress ideas as such, absent hate speech, concrete incitement to violence or the practice of illicit acts.”
To substantiate the demonstration, the prosecutor recalled that Monark himself condemned the , throughout the debate on the podcast (“Nazism is wrong, it’s the devil.”; “I’m not defending Nazism! “It’s rubbish.”)
After the episode, Monark went to live in the United States, having returned to Brazil last year. At the same time, he regained access to his social networks.
He had been banned from the main platforms by decision of the minister of the (Supreme Federal Court), after speeches questioning the Electoral Court.
