The president (PT) stated, this Friday (10.Apr.2026), that “It is expensive to have young victims of drug trafficking and organized crime”. The statement was made during the inauguration of the Tamanduatehy unit on the Santo André campus at UFABC (Federal University of ABC), in São Paulo.
According to the PT member, “investing in education is a very sacred thing, it is the best investment we make”. At the time, Lula was mentioning Pé-de-Meia, a program that offers a scholarship to high school students.
The president said they are “R$15 or R$18 billion” that prevent young people from giving up school to work and supplement the family budget. Annually, the Nest Egg costs R$12 billion.
A survey showed that the school scholarship, implemented in 2024, prevents 1 in every 4 young people from dropping out of school. . The Nest Egg caused the evasion rate to fall from 26.4% to 19.9%. The difference represents a reduction of 6.5 percentage points in the national average.

THE EVENT
The president inaugurated the Tamanduatehy unit on the Santo André campus of UFABC (Federal University of ABC), which expands the academic infrastructure of the São Paulo institution. The work received an investment of R$ 155.7 million, paid with resources from UFABC, the federal government and from legislative amendments. The built area exceeds 21,000 m².
The delivery of the blocks will allow the creation of 402 places in 4 courses:
- degree in natural and exact sciences will receive: 160 places;
- bachelor’s degree in data sciences: 96 places;
- bachelor’s degree in biotechnology: 96 places;
- pedagogy: 50 places.
