US President Donald Trump entered the tense election campaign in Hungary at the last minute on Friday, where current Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is fighting for votes against a pro-European opponent who is leading in public opinion polls. TASR informs about it based on the AFP report.
Trump has promised to bring US “economic power” to Hungary if Orbán’s party wins Sunday’s election over his arch-rival Peter Magyar. These comments brought an additional dose of tension to the finale of the campaign, during which Orbán and Magyar went head-to-head they exchanged accusations of unfair practices.
Orbán, who stands at the head of Hungary for 16 years and close to both Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, he faces an unprecedented challenge, whereas public opinion polls significantly they favor the Magyar-led conservative Tisza party.
“We look forward to investing in the future prosperity that Orbán’s continued leadership will bring,” said Trump on social networks. The Trump administration is supportive far-right forces in Europe, calling migration and “awakened” values a “civilizational” threat to the continent, writes AFP.
Orbán got through into a sharp dispute with the leadership of the European Union, which accuses it of suppressing dissent and violating the principles of the rule of lawwhile billions of euros from European funds were frozen.
“Our opponents will stop at nothing to seize power,” stated Orbán in a video on social networks, while he accused the opposition of “cooperation” with foreign intelligence services and of threatening his supporters with violence. “This is an organized attempt to use chaos, pressure and international vilification to question the decision of the Hungarian people,” stated.
Magyar responded with his own accusations. “The series of ongoing election frauds perpetrated by the ruling Fidesz party for months, along with crimes, intelligence operations, disinformation and fake news, cannot change the fact that Tisza will win these elections.” he said in a post on Facebook.
