Iraqi parliament elects Amedi as new president


Baghdad – Iraq’s parliament has elected a new president. Kurdish former environment minister Nizar Amedi has been chosen as the country’s new president, the parliament’s media department announced. The election of the president had previously failed due to disputes within rival political camps. Amedi was nominated as a candidate by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). According to Parliament, he received 227 out of 249 votes.
