Around 20% of students are in tutoring; The percentage rises when families with higher incomes are involved.

200 thousand students in total: one in five students, between the ages of 6 and 18, are in private explanations in Portugal.

The numbers appear in the recent study “The tutoring market in the Iberian Peninsula”, by the Social Observatory of the ”la Caixa” Foundation.

On average, private explanations cost 126,40 euros per student, per month. Overall, private tutoring represents a market worth 300 million euros per year in Portugal.

Not global, close to 20% of students attend these classes – but in families with higher incomes, the percentage rises to 25%.

And expenses also rise: around 30%, increased to around R$164 per month.

The percentage of students in explanations is higher in secondary education: 33%. It is a number related to the weight of national exams in secondary school.

Almost half of the services are carried out without invoice: only 58% of people indicate that services are billed.

In Portugal, the difficulties in the subject in question is the main reason for resorting to tutoring (40.8%), followed by preparation for national exams (31.3%).

Most sessions are mathematics, ahead of Portuguese, English and physics/chemistry.

On average, the student is 3h per week in explanations.
