Senate approves PT name for TCU after election in the Chamber – 04/15/2026 – Politics

The approved, this Wednesday (15), the appointment of deputy Odair Cunha (PT-MG) to the (Court of Auditors of the Union) in a vacancy that must be filled.

A simple majority was needed, and the PT member’s nomination received 50 votes in favor and 8 against. The secret vote was monitored by the deputy, who was present at the session in the neighboring House. The nomination will be promulgated by Congress.

Party leaders in the Senate, including those from the opposition, were in favor of approval and said they respected the choice of the neighboring House, as is customary in these cases. The president of the House, (União Brasil-AP), congratulated Odair Cunha and wished him success.

The deputy had the support of the government’s base, having in his alliance PT, PC do B, PV, PSB, PDT, PSOL and Rede, as well as a wing from the center, such as , the MDB and part of the PP. Second place was deputy Elmar Nascimento (-BA), who received 96 votes. The nominee of the PSDB/Cidadania federation, Danilo Forte (PP-CE), had 27 votes. Hugo Leal (PSD-RJ) received 20 votes and Gilson Daniel (Podemos-ES), 6.

The senator (-RJ), pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, from the neighboring House and attempted to unify the opposition around Elmar and defeat Lula’s candidate, but was unsuccessful.

Odair Cunha will replace minister Aroldo Cedraz, who retired. The successful candidate will be able to hold the position until retirement, which is compulsory at age 75.

The TCU’s function is to help Congress monitor and supervise Brazil’s budgetary and financial execution, exercising external control of the federal government.

Odair Cunha has been a federal deputy for Minas Gerais for six terms and has spent 23 years in Parliament.

The parliamentarian graduated in law in 1999 from the Faculty of Law of Varginha and says he was a municipal prosecutor, legal advisor and legal consultant for Municipal Chambers in Minas Gerais. He was also Secretary of State for the Government during the administration of Fernando Pimentel (PT).

He was mentioned in Lava Jato allegations and was even investigated by the STF (Supreme Federal Court) on suspicion of misappropriation of values ​​from the National Transport Confederation.

In 2019, the court referred the case to the first instance, as the facts were not related to the exercise of the mandate. He criticizes the use of the collaboration agreement in the complaint.
