Arrested for racism in RJ, Argentine lawyer is accused of car theft by her ex

Argentine lawyer Agostina Páez, who was arrested in January accused of racial slurs in Rio de Janeiro, became the target of a new complaint in her home country. Her ex-boyfriend went to court alleging that the young woman did not return a car after the relationship ended.

According to the accusation, presented by dentist Javier Zanoni, 32 years old, the vehicle — a Citroën Cactus — is registered in his name and would have been retained by his ex-partner. The couple was in a relationship for about three years.

The complaint was formalized in the city of La Banda, in the province of Santiago del Estero, Argentina. According to reports published by the local press, Zanoni decided to go to court to recover the car after being unsuccessful in previous attempts to resolve the issue.

Agostina’s defense denies any irregularity and maintains that the car was a gift from the lawyer’s family. Lawyers also indicate that the action may be personally motivated, related to the end of the relationship.

Racial slur

In the episode of racial insult that led to the lawyer’s arrest in Rio and was echoed in Brazil and Argentina, Agostina was caught on video imitating monkey gestures against employees of a bar in Ipanema, South Zone of Rio, on January 14. She spent around three months in Brazil, under precautionary measures, before paying bail of R$97,000 and returning to Argentina, where she will still have to answer in court for the case.

A few hours after the young woman returned to her country, her father, businessman Mariano Páez, was caught on video reproducing the same racist gestures that triggered the criminal proceedings against his daughter. He imitated monkey movements in a bar in Santiago del Estero, in the north of the country.

According to the Argentine press, the video was recorded in the early hours of Friday, a few hours after Agostina returned to the country, after more than two months in Brazil. The daily La Nación classified the case as “an endless scandal”, highlighting the repetition of the gesture that led to the lawsuit against the daughter. Clarín pointed out the attitude as a “provocation of a father who does not learn”, while Diario Popular highlighted the continuity of the crisis, with the publication of the images.
