Acting President Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) decreed three days of official mourning for the death of basketball player Oscar Schmidt, the biggest name in the sport in Brazil, who died this Friday, 17th, at the age of 68. The measure was published recently in an extra edition of Official Gazette of the Union (DOU).
Shortly after the announcement of his death, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who is traveling in Spain, paid tribute to Schmidt at X. According to the president, the player raised the country’s name and became an inspiration for generations of athletes.
“Oscar Schmidt, the ‘Mão Santa’, was the greatest idol in the history of Brazilian basketball and one of the greatest scorers in the sport. An example of obstinacy, talent and love for the national team’s shirt”, declared the president.
Oscar Schmidt died this Friday in Santana do Parnaíba (SP), after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest at his home, in Alphaville. He arrived at Santa Ana Municipal Hospital already lifeless. He leaves his wife, Maria Cristina, and his children Felipe and Stephanie. The wake will be restricted to family members.
