Brazilian triathlete Mara Flávia Araújo died on Saturday (18) during the Ironman Texas racein the United States. At 38 years old, she was participating in the swimming stage when disappeared in the watereven in the first moments of the test.
The alert quickly mobilized rescue teams. The searches were concentrated on Lake Woodlands, where the trail takes place. 3.9 kilometersbut the operation faced difficulties due to the low visibility in the early hours of the morning.
The athlete’s body was located hours later, after sweeps carried out with the support of local authorities. Fire Department and Montgomery County crews conducted the operation.
The death was confirmed by the event organizers, who released a note of condolence. “We are saddened to confirm the death of a race participant during the swimming portion of the Ironman Texas triathlon. We send our deepest condolences to the athlete’s family and friends and will offer them our support as they go through this difficult time. Our thanks go to the first responders for their help,” he said.
