PIX CRISIS IN THE LULA GOVERNMENT

In September 2024, the Federal Revenue created a normative instruction that determined that transactions above R$5,000 for individuals, made via Pix or other financial transactions (such as TED and debit), should be reported to the agency.

The objective, according to the government, was to prevent crimes such as money laundering and tax evasion. However, in January 2025, a video by the deputy (PL-MG) about the new rule went viral with more than 100 million views on Instagram.

In the recording, the congressman accused the government of taxing Pix. “The Lula government will monitor its spending. And Pix will not be taxed, but it is always good to remember… The purchase from China would not be taxed, but it was. It would not be confidential, but it was. Pix will not be taxed, but I have no doubt that it could be”he stated.

The normative instruction from the Federal Revenue Service was one of the measures taken by the then Minister of Finance that gave rise to the nickname “Taxad”.

The controversy had a negative impact and weighed on the government’s popularity. As a result, Planalto revoked the measure and highlighted, on several occasions, that no taxes would be charged on Pix.

PIX IN THE BOLSONARO GOVERNMENT

Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) stated, in March 2025, that the former Economy Minister, Paulo Guedes, tried Pix and created a tax on beer. However, he said he prevented the plan from proceeding.

Wanting is one thing. Back then, Paulo Guedes’ team wanted to tax beer, but I didn’t let them. There were people on his team who said it was a small fee“, he declared, participating in the podcast Limited Intelligence.
