Brazilian vacuum in UN committee worries – 04/20/2026 – Panel

The absence of a Brazilian candidate to join has worried entities that see an advance by the extreme right in occupying this space.

Countries such as Argentina and El Salvador have already submitted candidacies. Registration ends next Thursday (23).

In a manifesto, several entities demand that Brazil not omit itself, under penalty of seeing setbacks in achievements for children and adolescents.

Another concern is the name to be indicated. In a letter sent to Itamaraty, the Ministry of Human Rights defended George Lima’s name.

In the text, the then minister praises the work done by Lima, who, for seven years, served on the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the OAS (Organization of American States). Macaé left his position on the 1st, and the then executive secretary Janine Mello took over the ministry.

“The current international context demands members of treaty bodies who combine technical rigor, capacity for dialogue and institutional sensitivity”, says the letter.

The tone is seen as concern for the advancement of another name in dispute, that of Benedito dos Santos.

Members of bodies defending human rights disagree with the name and say that Santos would represent a setback in the defense of children’s rights.

This is because, as a consultant for UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund), in 2013, Santos advocated increasing the length of stay for adolescent offenders.

Social movements are campaigning against his name because they understand that Santos relativizes important issues that could be addressed without increasing punishment. For them, the position meets the conservative wave that is advancing in the world.
