Péter Magyar hit a sensitive spot: he sent Fico a hard ultimatum! Hungarians in Slovakia are to be threatened with prison

According to his words, the future Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar emphasized in his Tuesday phone call with the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic Robert Fico (Smer-SD) that Hungary can participate in discussions on political issues only when it receives guarantees that Slovakia will cancel the legislation that threatens Hungarians in the Slovak Republic with imprisonment. It must also be clearly established that in the future there will be no confiscation of the land of Hungarian compatriots in Slovakia based on Beneš’s decrees and the principle of collective guilt, TASR informs, referring to Magyar’s post on the X social network.

  • Péter Magyar is asking for guarantees of the repeal of Slovak legislation threatening Hungarians with imprisonment.
  • Hungary will make active political discussions conditional on guarantees against the confiscation of Hungarian land.
  • The future Tisza government plans to strengthen Hungarian-Slovak relations and Visegrad cooperation.
  • Protecting the rights of Hungarian compatriots in Slovakia remains Budapest’s highest priority.
  • Robert Fico highlights the fundamental dispute over the Beneš decree in bilateral relations.

“I confirmed again to the Slovak prime minister that the Tisza government will work to strengthen Hungarian-Slovak relations and to rebuild Visegrad cooperation,” wrote Magyar on X.

He stated that first, however, the mentioned concerns must be clarified and resolved. “I emphasized that for every Hungarian government, the protection of the rights of our Hungarian compatriots in Slovakia remains the highest priority in Hungarian-Slovak relations,” he pointed out.

According to Magyar, he and the Slovak prime minister agreed to continue the discussions, personally at the upcoming meeting of the European Council in Brussels. The Slovak Prime Minister also informed about the phone call, according to which the main goal of this conversation was to find out the positions of the new Hungarian political leadership regarding the reopening of the Druzhba pipeline and the lawsuit against the RePowerEU regulationwhich the Slovak Republic and Hungary are filing against the EU in connection with the stoppage of the flow of Russian gas and oil. Fico claims that Magyar – as he is not yet officially prime minister – has only commented on individual issues in general terms.

“However, it clearly emerged from the interview that Péter Magyar’s priority in Slovak-Hungarian relations is and will be the Beneš decrees, where we have fundamentally different positions,” said the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic.

Fico added that he proposed to discuss any other topics outside of energy security in person. He clarified that Magyar’s official visit to Slovakia or his visit to Budapest will be preceded by a working meeting at the EU summit in Brussels.
