Myanmar’s new president has declared a 90-day state of emergency in 60 areas and imposed military control over them

According to the official statement, this measure is intended to suppress armed terrorism and restore the rule of law. All executive and judicial power in the affected regions is taken over by the army, which is the first major decision by the president since he took office in April.

Myanmar President Min Aung Hlain has issued a new emergency decree to impose military control in 60 urban areas. The Reuters agency states that this step is aimed at increasing security in the regions, which, despite the efforts to transition to a civilian government, are mired in conflict, writes TASR.

Areas under military control

An official statement published by Myanmar media on Friday cited the need to “end armed terrorism” and restore the rule of law as the main justification for the 90-day state of emergency.

For this period, all executive and judicial power in the mentioned areas will be taken over by the new head of the junta, Je Vin Ú.

Min Aung Hlain’s first steps

According to Reuters, the order is the first major step by Min Aung Hlain, who was elected president by the bicameral parliament this month.

Myanmar has been mired in civil war since 2021, when the military overthrew leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Following this coup, the Hlain-led junta imposed a nationwide state of emergency, which it repeatedly extended before holding elections in December and January. According to critics, they were neither free nor fair, reports Reuters.
