Juraj C., accused in the case of the assassination of Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD), is to appear before the Court of Appeal on Wednesday (April 29). This follows from the schedule of hearings of the Supreme Court (NS) of the Slovak Republic.
The defendant Juraj C., who shot Prime Minister Robert Fico in Handlova on May 15, 2024, was found guilty of the crime of terrorist attack last October by the Specialized Criminal Court (ŠTS) in Banská Bystrica. He sentenced him to 21 years in prison for that. The defendant appealed against the verdict.
Juraj C. was sentenced to life imprisonment for the terrorist attack. The ŠTS, however, used extraordinary mitigating provisions, while the lower limit to which he could go for this crime was 20 years. The president of the senate justified the lower limit of the rate by the fact that the defendant is an older person, blameless and not quite in good health.
Juraj C. claimed during the trial at the first instance court that he decided to damage Fico’s health so that he would no longer be able to perform the function of prime minister. He said he didn’t want to kill him. The assailant fired five times at the prime minister and injured him several times.
