Train collision leaves at least two dead in Indonesia

At least two people died this Monday in a collision between two trains near Jakarta, state railway company Kereta Api Indonesia announced.

“Hospital records indicate that two victims died,” said spokesman Franoto Wibowo at the scene of the accident.

The evacuation of victims, whose total number is not yet known, continues with the support of the Armed Forces, firefighters and the Indonesian search and rescue agency.

“All efforts are focused on evacuating passengers and employees and assisting victims,” ​​company spokeswoman Anne Purba said in a statement.

The accident occurred in the vicinity of Bekasi Timur station, about 25 kilometers east of Indonesia’s capital.

According to the television channel, the collision involved a long-distance train and a commuter train.

Train accidents are frequent in Indonesia

The last major railway accident in Indonesia occurred in January 2024, in the province of West Java, and caused four dead and around 20 injured.

Transport accidents are relatively frequent in this Southeast Asian archipelago, where some of the infrastructure and means of transport show signs of aging.

In 2015, a collision between a commuter train and a minibus at a level crossing caused 16 deaths in Jakarta.
