The JuntOz Collective Mandate, from the Osasco Chamber, filed this Monday (27) an action with the Public Ministry of São Paulo to investigate the responsibility of Osasco City Hall in the disposal of around 40 thousand books from the Monteiro Lobato Municipal Library.
According to the collective, the event is entirely made up of donations and is considered the largest in the western region of Greater São Paulo.
In the representation, the authors ask for an investigation into possible negligence with the municipality’s cultural heritage, in addition to possible crimes against public property and accountability for those involved.
After justifying the municipal administration that the books were contaminated by fungi, the collective reported that it had requested that the city hall present proof of contamination and the need for disposal, a detailed list of books sent to the trash and a plan for immediate replacement of the collection.
In the final request, the representatives request the immediate initiation of, or preparatory procedure, to determine the responsibility of Mayor Gerson Pessoa and municipal secretaries of Culture for the failure to maintain and dispose of the collection.
The group also requests an urgent administrative recommendation for Osasco City Hall to suspend any new disposal of books from the Monteiro Lobato Library, seal the remaining dumpsters and recover material that has not yet been removed.
Another measure requested is the adoption of conservation actions for recoverable specimens, in addition to the opening of a police investigation to investigate possible crimes such as qualified damage, embezzlement and infringements against cultural heritage.
The representatives also request an urgent expert report on discarded and rescued books to check for fungal contamination.
A CNN Brazil contacted Osasco City Hall and is awaiting a response.
