Former councilor who became quadriplegic after a stray bullet dies in Rio

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Cavaliere (PSD), declared three days of official mourning for the death of the former councilor Luciana Novaes (PT). The decision was published in an extra edition of the Official Gazette on Monday night (27).

Graduated in social work, the former councilor became quadriplegic in 2003after being hit by a in the neighborhood of Rio Comprido, north of the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

Luciana was 42 years old and was hospitalized when presented a sudden and serious complicationaccording to his advisor. Medical information indicates that the condition is compatible with the rupture of a brain aneurysm, followed by worsening of the neurological condition.

Given the clinical evolution, the brain death protocol was adopted, which consists of exams to confirm complete and irreversible disruption of brain functions. The condition is legally recognized as death.

The president of the City Council, Carlo Caiado (PSD), released a statement expressing regret over the death. The text mentions Luciana’s work in, especially for people with disabilities, the elderly and groups in vulnerable situations.

Throughout his political career, she was involved in drafting around 200 laws. The Chamber informed that it sympathizes with family, friends and members of its team.
