Messias defends opposition in the hearing: “It only exists in democracy”

AGU said that the STF must protect the prerogatives of congressmen and sometimes take positions in defense of the opposition

The President’s Nominee (PT) for the Jorge Messias, defended this Wednesday (April 29, 2026) the role of the opposition in Brazilian democracy. The speech was made during his hearing at (Constitution and Justice Committee) of the Senate.

Messias was asked about the decisions of STF ministers who blocked or changed requests from the and the In response he stated: “I know how important the role of the opposition is, the opposition only exists in democracy”.

Messias highlighted the Court’s role in preserving the rights of the political opposition. The nominee stated that the STF, as guardian of the Constitution, “must take care of the prerogative of parliamentarians”.

The Union’s attorney general added that the STF needs, on several occasions, to adopt counter-majoritarian positions in defense of the political camp contrary to the Planalto. He justified this need by stating that the “living democracy presupposes a living opposition”.
