Bouba Diop’s record was set in just one edition of the tournament. The midfielder scored the most famous goal in Senegalese football: the goal of 1-0 victory over France in the opening game of the 2002 World Cup. The result shocked the planet, as the French were the current world champions at the time.

Still in the group stage that year, Diop scored two more goals in the dramatic 3-3 draw against Uruguay, guaranteeing the team’s unprecedented qualification for the round of 16. The former player passed away prematurely in 2020, at the age of 42, but his mark remains intact at the top of the “Lions of Teranga” statistics.

The quest for a record at the 2026 World Cup

Despite being the greatest overall scorer in history of the Senegalese national team with more than 50 goals, the star Sadio Mané scored just one goal in World Cups (against Japan in 2018). An injury on the eve of the tournament ruled the striker out of the 2022 edition of Qatar, which prevented him from trying to surpass Bouba Diop’s historic mark.

With a vacancy practically ready for the 2026 edition in the United States, Mexico and Canada, Mané remains active and with real chances of break the 2002 record. He shares the offensive role with a new crop of attackers in activitylike Nicolas Jackson and Ismaila Sarr, who will arrive at the next World Cup with the mission of rewriting the top of this statistic.Papa Bouba Diop’s isolated record remains the main individual achievement in Senegalese football. His three goals paved the way for the country’s unforgettable quarter-final campaign in 2002 and still serve as the big target to hit by the current generation of African players.
