Nature tourism continues to gain prominence among European travelers and there are destinations that, despite their proximity, remain little explored by many Portuguese. One of these places has now been distinguished as the most beautiful in the world by a well-known international magazine and is located in northern Spain.
The British magazine Time Out recently released the list of the 51 most beautiful places in the world, placing at the top a destination located just a few hours from Portugal.
The Picos de Europa were considered the most beautiful place on the annual list, standing out for their rare combination of imposing mountains, deep gorges and proximity to the Cantabrian Sea.
Unique landscapes between mountain and sea
This mountain range rises approximately 20 kilometers from the coast and reaches an altitude of 2650 meters at Torre de Cerredo, the highest point in the region, according to the portal.
According to the publication, the highlight of this national park is the contrast between rocky peaks, gorges excavated over thousands of years and panoramic trails that offer views where mountains, beaches and ocean intersect.
Among the most emblematic points are Naranjo de Bulnes, the villages of Sotres and Caín, as well as the Lakes of Covadonga.
Trails and experiences that attract visitors
One of the best-known routes in the region is the Rota del Cares, which is approximately 23 kilometers long. This trail was excavated in the rock and crosses a gorge marked by steep slopes, waterfalls and landscapes of great visual impact, according to the same source.
Over the years, it has become one of the most popular hikes for those visiting this area, especially among lovers of nature and outdoor activities.
Local life marked by tradition
The same magazine also highlights the way of life of the communities that inhabit the region. In several mountain villages, livestock farming, cheese production and rural tourism continue to define daily life.
Living in the “most beautiful place in the world” means facing harsh winters and difficult access, but it also provides tranquility, fresh air and a strong connection to the territory, as mentioned by the same source.
Douro also highlighted on the list
The list also includes other destinations close to the Iberian Peninsula. The Douro Valley comes in fourth place, highlighted by its terraced vineyards and the course of the river.
This publication states that the region continues to produce some of the highest quality wines in the world and highlights the landscape marked by slopes carved into terraces, which create a unique visual setting.
Among the suggested experiences is the traditional pressing of grapes in presses, a practice still maintained on some farms, such as Quinta da Pacheca.
Other destinations among the most beautiful in the world
In addition to these places, the ranking includes cities and landscapes from different parts of the world. The historic center of Bologna appears in seventh place, while Capo Testa, in Sardinia, occupies eighth place.
Also in the top ten are Komodo National Park, the Morgan Library and Museum, Big Sur, Ullswater, Victoria Falls and the Punakha Valley.
This recognition reinforces the diversity of natural and cultural landscapes that continue to attract travelers from around the world, including destinations located within a short distance of Portugal.
