Does potato blight attack young tomato seedlings?

Tomatoes are one of the most frequently chosen vegetables (botanical fruits) for self-growing. They are cultivated both on allotments, in home gardens, and even in pots on balconies or terraces. Many people choose to grow from seeds only. First, they sow them into seedlings, and when the seedlings are tall enough, they transplant them into the ground. This approach allows for full control over every stage of plant development. Professional gardeners suggest that tomatoes should be transplanted into the ground after the last night frosts have passed. In our climate, such a date is considered to be the time after May 15, i.e. after the cold Zośka.

. The plants do not yet have a well-developed immune system and may be attacked by fungal diseases. One of the diseases that can attack young tomato seedlings is potato blight. In case of a cool and rainy spring, this disease may appear as early as early June.

Potato blight is a dangerous plant disease caused by the fungus Phytophthora infestans. It most often manifests itself with brown spots on the leaves and a white coating on the underside. Dry spots lead to the plant breaking. If the disease attacks at a later date, it may also cause symptoms on the fruit. They are covered with hard, brown spots. Potato blight leads to complete destruction of crops and can spread very quickly between tomato bushes. As with many fungal plant diseases, its spores are most often found in old and rotted organic remains. Always remove infected shoots, rotten fruit and fallen leaves. Do not use them for composting because this way you can unknowingly spread diseases to other plants.

Home spraying for potato blight in tomatoes. This forgotten liquid will save your harvest

Spraying works best. The same is true for potato late blight. The type of spraying should be adapted to the level of disease development. If it is already in an advanced stage, it is best to use chemical sprays, such as cuprate and fungicide-based preparations. If the disease has just appeared, you can use home, natural solutions. One of them is this forgotten liquid. It is a cheap (only about PLN 3) antibacterial and antiseptic agent that you can find in every pharmacy. In gardening, it is great for disinfecting and killing fungal spores. It destroys disease pathogens and strengthens plant immunity. Just add about 40 drops of iodine to 10 liters of water and spray the tomato seedlings with the prepared solution. It is important that the liquid also covers the undersides of the leaves. To make the spray even more effective, you can add 1 liter of milk to it. It will improve the adhesion of the preparation and its effectiveness. Iodine spraying can be repeated every two weeks. Before spraying against diseases, remember to manually remove all infected shoots, leaves and fruits.

How to care for tomatoes in the ground so that they do not get sick?

Experienced gardeners often use the technique of “hardening” tomato seedlings before planting them into the ground. It involves gradually accustoming young plants to outdoor conditions for about a week, exposing them outside for several hours a day. This significantly increases their resistance to stress after transplanting and reduces the risk of disease. Instead of relying solely on chemical plant protection products, consider using natural methods. Garlic, horsetail and nettle extracts can strengthen the immunity of tomatoes and repel pests. One of the most common mistakes that lead to tomato diseases is improper watering. Watering the leaves instead of the soil directly promotes the development of fungal diseases such as potato blight or alternaria blight.
